Every child is unique and so is the journey of each child’s growth. Nevertheless, several studies have shown that a child’s growth or development can be compartmentalized to understand it better. Most researchers have concluded that five stages can be considered milestones in a child’s growth journey. These milestones often overlap and are sequential in nature – which means that each stage is equally important for the next stage to is the rhythm which human growth or development cycle involves.
Learning plays a very important role at each stage. Children learn by observing and gradually acquire skills that are going to prove instrumental at a later stage in their lives.
First Stage: New Born
The first few months are very crucial as babies at this stage begin to respond to things and even emotions. They usually react to the actions of the parents by trying to display their emotions through smiles or crying. At this stage, babies learn by imitating.
Second Stage: Infant
Gradually, when children are 3-6 months old, they begin to learn new skills rather quickly. Over the next few years, their brain is bound to grow rapidly. By the age of 6-9 months, an infant can begin to respond to his/her name with which comes as a sense of recognition of the self.
This is the right time to expose children to objects involving the five senses. It is also the right time to implement routines that will be useful with developing communication at a later stage.
Third Stage: Toddler
By the time children are 3 years old, they have gained enough physical strength to be able to walk, jump and even climb stairs. Physical exposure increases, giving a lot of opportunities for learning and acquiring new things.
This is the right age to maximize learning by using the child’s natural eagerness to grow knowledge. A thoughtfully prepared course structure can prove beneficial in emphasizing free-thinking and initiating independent learning.
Fourth Stage: Preschool
At the age of 4-5, children have already started acquiring knowledge from their surroundings. They have a sense of the everyday essential jobs that forms a part of their routine.
At this stage, they can be introduced to the activities like drawing, completing puzzles, recognizing shapes etc. It is the best time to inculcate well-defined activities like dancing, singing or even learning a new language.
Fifth Stage: School Age
By this time children are already building relations with others and are capable of making decisions for themselves. They already have a few hobbies and have enough command over their native language to be able to communicate with friends and teachers. Activities involving memorizing ethical values should be encouraged along with developing expertise in their area of interest.
Regardless of the child’s age, some everyday activities improve brain development. It is very important to give attention to the child’s growing needs. Certain skills are best acquired at a certain age. It is necessary to not just recognize but also fulfill the growing curiosity of a young mind.
Just like parents, teachers too can contribute by answering the never-ending questions of a curious child. Correct information at the right age is the key to effective learning.
