What is the “Bully Bai” Controversy?

On 1^st January 2022, a serious matter came to light which exposed our society’s harsh realities. The entire controversy revolves around a mobile application called “Bully Bai” that was run by some college students who used it to defame women online by using their manipulated pictures without their knowledge. This matter shows how the evils like misogyny, communalism have infiltrated the brains of young educated students.

Who has made the “Bully Bai” App?

It is shocking to know that Neeraj Bishnoi, a 21-year-old, second-year B.tech student, Vellore Institute of Technology, Bhopal was the master-mind behind creating the “Bulli Bai” application on GitHub. Many women, particularly of the Islam faith, were targeted and 'auctioned' using this app. Along with him, the people who have been associated with these apps include Vishal Kumar Jha, a 21-year-old, software engineer, Dayanadsagar College of Engineering, Bangaluru, Shweta Singh, 18-year-old, an engineering student, and Shubham Rawat. By creating a Twitter account from which they operated, they were defaming women on the internet who were vocal about their opinions on political issues.

What is the similarity between the “Bulli Bai” app and the “Sulli deal”?

From the outside, the “Bulli Bai” incident appears to be the work of some misguided, anti-social elements of society, but a larger picture forces us to dig deeper into the past to uncover the origins of this incident, something that lies within the creation of another app. known as the “Sulli Deals”, which came to light in June of last year. Perhaps the current disaster could have been averted if severe action had been taken last year.

Recognizing the negative impacts of technology is the only way to go forward. Everything has advantages and disadvantages, but all done in moderation yields excellent results. Rather than wasting time and effort being indoctrinated into doing something unethical, we may channel our mental energy into learning new skills and use those skills for the betterment of society at large. Knowledge has been given high regard since the times of Plato yet incidents like these leaves us with many questions regarding the right ways of imparting knowledge. Technological developments combined with ethical behaviour can propel our society forward.
