It is always quite confusing to know how different students want to be taught by their teachers. Some prefer that a teacher should not focus much on each of them, some want appreciation even for their smallest efforts, some want the teacher to be friendly and not strict, and so on. But, there are some specific things which are commonly preferred by all the students. And it is better if teachers also get to know these things so that their students can enjoy their teachings in a better way and the classes don't become boring for them.
Students should understand the topic
Every student wants that whatever the topic is, a teacher should explain it in a way in which every student, including the below-average ones also, gets a clear understanding of it. Many teachers explain a topic in a way that only a few students can understand it, but they don’t care about the below-average or average scoring students. This makes the students remain silent with their doubts. Especially in Mathematics, a teacher solves the question in a short-cut method which is only understood by few other students, but the teacher doesn’t repeat the solution in a simpler way for other students and moves ahead with the further syllabus to save time. Students who didn’t understand face trouble afterward.
They should feel frank to share their doubts with teachers
Many teachers ignore the doubts of students because according to them they have already explained it properly and a student ought not to have any problem in understanding. The teachers, in such cases, make the students who put their doubts around guilty for not understanding the concept in one go. They don't understand the IQ level of every student. Instead, teachers should invite more questions and doubts in the class as that would help the other students, who have been ignoring the topic, understand it as well.
Teachers must make the class enjoyable
Many teachers are just teaching the theory part, giving homework, taking normal tests, and generally commenting on the marks attained by the students. Usually, this type of structure or process seems boring to the majority of students. They love it when the class is interactive. Some intellectual games should be played in the classroom to encourage the involvement of students. Teachers should not focus only on the syllabus, but they should also stay aware of the performance of students and should be interested in knowing whether their classes are being taken seriously or not by the students.
Motivation but no disrespect!
Sometimes, teachers discriminate between students based on their marks. Students want to be treated impartially. Yes, of course, the ones who put more effort into attaining good results expect more respect, but some other students also try their best but still don't get marks. A teacher should motivate their students irrespective of the percentage in their report cards. When students don't get good marks, teachers should support the students by discussing with them their mistakes and appreciating the efforts they had put into learning a subject, instead of discouraging them.
Appreciate students
Appreciate students for their skills apart from the studies, and support them! Marks should not be the only priority. Teachers should also appreciate their students for their participation in the class because some students participate in class discussions, but don’t get marks in the examinations. Some students are not good at studies but have some unique skills, and teachers should appreciate and acknowledge those other talents and skills. After all, school is not only about study and marks. Students like it when their skills are cherished. It motivates them manifolds.
Teachers should remember these couple of points to make their teaching more beneficial to all the students. Good teachers know how to bring out the best in their students. A teacher can make a poor student better and a good student superior.
