Importance of Creativity in Education

Creativity is one of those qualities that comes to an individual naturally, but if we actually ask them to describe what creativity means to them, they get stuck with their thoughts.

We can go on and on with our lists of creative people like Tessy Thomas, A.R Rehman, Elon Musk, Sundar Pichai, Kalpana Chawla, Rabindranath Tagore and their creative ways (a novel, an invention, a new way of looking at the world), However, it's difficult to grasp the concept of creativity as a whole.

But, since we must begin somewhere, let us begin with a definition:

Creativity is the ability to think or act in ways that are different from what others have done before, and to come up with new and unique ideas, methods, or objects.

Creativity has only been around for the past 60-80 years. In the 1920s, we saw the advent of the concept of modern creativity for the first time. After Graham Wallas' book Art of Thought, creativity as an ability or a personality trait became popular. Wallas provides a blueprint for how people solve challenges and think creatively in this work.

As we know that creativity is the ability to generate new ideas, but it still sounds a little hazy and intangible (kind of like suggesting that swimming is the ability to avoid drowning in water—technically correct, but not especially useful if you're looking for a deeper understanding, or if you just want to avoid drowning).

All skills start in the brain: be it physical (learning to swim the breaststroke) or mental (learning to answer an algebraic equation), it's all about neurons in the right part of the brain firing over and over until you've mastered it.

The right blend of creativity in curriculums can help students to be innovative and also encourages them to learn new things. Students can become great communicators while also working on their emotional and social skills. Creative classrooms can really transform the way students acquire education and how they apply it in their real life.

As Edward de Bono perfectly describes it "There is no doubt that creativity is the most important human resource of all. Without creativity, there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns."

Every child possesses the ability to be imaginative, which can manifest itself in a variety of ways. The teacher's role is critical in creating a healthy atmosphere in which a child feels free to express their creativity, explore it, and comprehend its significance. Creativity has only recently been recognized as an important part of a child's development, and research has shown that creativity is a valuable tool for expressing oneself and recognizing one's own and others' thoughts and feelings. Creativity, on the other hand, cannot be forced; it must be coaxed out, nurtured, and it is a teacher's job to facilitate and give time for this to happen for each and every student.

Creativity is very important in education as it helps in the emotional development of an individual. A wave of emotion can also help facilitate creative expression in a child, and even in an adult. Younger children convey their true emotions through play: it allows them to discover the world around them, test limits, and collect information in order to make sense of their surroundings. Encouragement of creativity in older children can lead them to express their feelings and opinions through art projects, music, theatre, or some other creative outlet that would otherwise be kept hidden. And those who are able to express their feelings in this way are happier and freer.

Creativity may be used to interact with others and to share an experience with someone with whom we would otherwise not interact.

Communication, empathy, and understanding between students are crucial, so developing a classroom atmosphere that allows for plenty of opportunities for collaborative learning, group problem solving, and innovative thinking will encourage students to open up to one another, support each other, and interact through a shared creative experience.

Creativity in learning and education also enhances future opportunities. The job market has improved in recent years; there has been a noticeable shift in the job market, with creative people being favored over those with specialized skill sets.

Innovation and the ability to think beyond the box are now among the most sought-after qualities in a potential employee. Candidates who know how to be creative and can express this easily will be way ahead of the competition, so learning this skill early is important.

And more importantly, creativity infuses life with a different sort of depth and richness. As Osho said, “To be creative means to be in love with life. You can be creative only if you love life enough that you want to enhance its beauty, you want to bring a little more music to it, a little more poetry to it, a little more dance to it.”
