Teachers put in years of effort and thousands of dollars to become subject matter experts, with degrees and teaching certification to prove it. And students continue to fail.

The issue is that many pupils are uninterested in learning. A student who is not motivated will not learn, even if the lesson plan is flawless. An excellent teacher understands that student motivation is critical to academic achievement, and that instructors are in a unique position to help students enhance their drive. Here are some classroom methods that may be utilised to assist encourage students:

1. Promoting growth over fixed mindsets

Praise for their efforts and hard work is one of the most effective components of feedback for our students. Praise for talents rather than efforts promotes the fixed mentality that pupils either have the ability or don't, and that no amount of effort on the learner's side will change the outcome. We should all be encouraged to be lifelong learners.

We may model the development attitude as instructors. Have faith in yourself! Request feedback from students about your classes and be prepared to make any modifications. Be committed! This response demonstrates that we, too, are students. It also asks our pupils to join us on our educational adventure.

2. Build meaningful relationships with your students

We must get to know everyone of our pupils on a personal level if we are to genuinely inspire and encourage them. We need to know about their hobbies and interests, as well as who they spend time with, their family situations, and what excites them. Each kid will require various motivating methods, and we must understand them in order to forecast which strategies will be effective.

We might regard it as our job to figure out what they are by getting to know them and then teaching them properly. As a consequence of this effort, we are better able to know our students, resulting in a more unified and open learning environment.

3. Develop a classroom community of learners

Students require a safe learning environment in which they are prepared to take chances and strive. To do this, students and teachers must collaborate to achieve common objectives. In class, students must be willing to collaborate with and support other students.

Additionally, rather than a room full of individual learners, teachers might employ language that encourages a community of learners - including the teacher. Using the terms "we" and "our" instead of "I" and "you" has a big influence on classroom culture and how pupils work together as interdependent learners.

4. Establish clear goals and high expectations

Maintaining high academic expectations is essential for learning, but maintaining high standards for conduct, academic language, group work, and even the duration and structure of individual work is also required for deep learning. We can't presume kids are aware of these standards. They must be well-defined. We must educate kids how to behave in a specific way and keep them accountable if we expect them to do so. If we want an assignment to appear in a specific format, we must model and anticipate it. Learning becomes the most important action in the classroom after the routines to support expectations are established and obvious to the learning community.

5. Make an inspirational statement

To their students, inspirational instructors symbolise achievement. Completing a marathon, starting a small business, or winning a teaching award are all examples of teacher success. We all have accomplishments to boast about. Students may understand what success looks like and go for it by studying our victories. When our kids determine that they want to succeed, they study the habits, decisions, and even sacrifices that lead to our success. Hard effort, a desire to suffer, and the ability to learn from our errors are all examples of these traits.
